Public Works Yard Access
- affecting the Compost Pile and Sani-Dump

Our apologies.

We can understand the frustration of residents when they were surprised to see the new gate at the public works yard locked over the weekend resulting in a lack of access. Regrettably, there was an oversight in communication as the information about the operational hour update has not been re-posted since spring 2023.

As a result of theft from the public works yard, increasing costs due to ongoing misuse of the compost pile and liability concerns of both residents and non-residents having access of the public works yard, 24 hours a day - 7 days a week, discussion relating to the compost pile and sani-dump were brought to Council for review in October 2022.

Following lengthy discussion the decision was made to restrict access to the public works yard to regular operating hours, recognizing that the Westlock Regional Waste Management Facility also offers access to a compost facility with a review of Council in October 2023.

There was also direction to have a new security gate installed across the driveway, and re-location of the Sani-Dump site as part of the 2023 Summer Capital Projects program.
While the new operating hours of Monday-Friday 8:30am – 4:00 pm had been included in the May Newsletter, the new gate installation which was completed on August 3rd, enforces the accessible hours for both facilities.
In the event that you would like to dispose of your compost outside of these hours, the Westlock Regional Waste Management Facility is open Tuesday-Friday from 10:00am to 5:45pm and Saturday from 9:00am to 4:45pm.
Administration is anticipating that construction of the new sani-dump location will be underway later this fall.
